Google and the NSA

Google's teaming up with the NSA to investigate the cyber-attack that prompted Google to cease operation in China. Maybe it's just me, but I find any article with Google and the NSA in the same sentence unsettling.

  1. I have to tell you, the mere thought of the NSA getting anywhere near the massive amounts of personal data which Google has accumulated about..well pretty much everyone is chilling. On the other hand, I wouldn't want the Chinese government getting their hands on it either.

There are two interesting things about this story. First, that Google believes that the NSA can help them in their investigation. More than anything else, that bolsters my confidence in the NSA. I wouldn't think Google would need much help on something like this. The fact that they turned to the NSA is quite a compliment.

Second, that the NSA agreed to do it. In order to justify this kind of alliance between a government organization and a private corporation, I would think the NSA would have to have concluded that the security of Google's databases is in fact an issue of national security. I wouldn't disagree with that claim, but it is always a little scary when the government decides that a company is too important to fail.
